In other words, if you are standing in the middle of a long hallway with floor tiles, looking down the hallway so that it fades into the distance, then the game engine must render that hallway using several different texture sizes. If you are looking at something that fades into the distance, like a road or sidewalk, then you can see the boundaries between the textures. The farther away from the object you are, then it paints with the lower detail texture. The game engine "paints" objects with the highest detail textures when you are standing very close to the object. The larger sizes have more detail, the small sizes have very little detail. As I understand it, games store textures in several different sizes. If you're looking at a brick wall in a game, the texture is the image that is applied to the wall to make it look like brick. 4xAA does a pretty good job at smoothing the jaggies.ĪF is all about texture filtering. AA is used to smooth these lines so they don't look jagged. You know how when you're playing a game and you look at the top of a roof, a wall, a fence, or anything that is supposed to be a straight line? Without AA, the "straight" line will have a jagged edge. If you're playing at 1024x768, then you should have no problems.ġ280x1024 is the "natural" resolution for most LCD displays, and it seems your system should be able to handle that with little slow-down. If you're trying to play HL2 with all settings on HIGH at 1600x1200, then your system will definitely get bogged-down at times. Of course, all these titles are still backwards compatible on my gaming PC (quite a formidable creature compared to that first budget PC I built all those years ago) but it's cool that Xbox One players can also play them on their systems now.You forgot the most important thing: What resolution are you playing at? The visuals at the time were so striking compared to console graphics.
I built my first PC so that I could play Half-Life 2. That game ushered in my own personal gaming renaissance, and I immersed myself first in all of Valve's titles (especially Counter-Strike and Team Fortress 2) and then RPGs like The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. I don't think I've ever been so pleased with a game as the first time I was able to run Half-Life 2 on a computer I built myself. It's about playing some of these wonderful older games on your current console, especially if you missed them but even if you're just pining with nostalgia.
Of course, these older games won't look as good as modern titles, but it's not just about the visuals. It's a pretty neat trick, and it really does work.
